Starting A Collection
If you have got "The bug" or are just looking to grow your collection
our advice is to buy a new orchid once a month in flower rather then buy a heap of orchids all at once. This way you will keep interested in your new found passion "addiction" after 12 months you will have 12 plants but they will typically flower at different times of the year. you will have orchids in flower all year round. From this you can build your collection and find the orchids that grow best and the ones that you like best.
If building a shade house BEWARE make it as big as you can or at least make it twice the size to what you think you may need. always allow room to move as once you start it is extremely rewarding and is a hobby that does not need heaps of time but if you let it it can take over your life
Once you find what potting mix (medium) you like best pot all your orchids in it. this helps with watering, if one plant is potted in a different mix to another the plants watering need may be different. If you can not do this group your orchids in a way to make watering easier
If your growing area is outside, cover one part of it with clear horticulture plastic/solar weave/ fibreglass or something similar. use this area to put your flowering plants when not in your home. this covering extends life to your flowers and stops rain etc.... form marking your flowers. Also if you down the track grow any baby plants or even De-Flask orchids this will give you a more controlled environment
HAPPY GROWING
